How to use the chat room

If you’ve never been in a chat room before, here’s what you need to know.

Our convention chat room is located here: http://www.tammyconvention.com/2007Chat.html

Logging In: When you see the sign-in screen, the only field you need to fill in is “your nickname”. Your nickname can be
anything you choose. You might want to consider using your first name and state or country where you live such as
Joe_in_NY or your name from the Tammy yahoo group, or your normal screen name. You are free to use whatever you
are comfortable with, but it would be nice if everyone can recognize each other from past dealings. However, if you prefer
to remain anonymous, you can create a dummy name as well. You are permitted to use spaces in nicknames, so Joe in
NY would appear as Joe_in_NY. If the nickname you choose is already in use, you will be asked to select another. You
do not need a password to get in the chat room. Before you go in, make sure that the Join Channel says #Tammy or you
might end up in the wrong chat room.

Once You’re In: When you first enter the chat room, it might take a few seconds for the connection to be made, and
you might see some text scroll quickly in the chat room screen before it stops. After that you should see on the right side
of the screen a list of nicknames of people who are already in the room. Your nickname will appear there as well. Text
may be scrolling on the left hand side of the screen. That is people chatting. You will not be able to see anything that was
discussed before you entered the room. If you want to go into full screen mode with an easier  (less complicated) screen
to view the chat session, you can click on the square box at the top right hand side (next to the “X”). A new window will
popup (and depending on your computer you may or might not be in it already—if not you need to find the window on
the bottom of your screen and click on it). Once you click on the box to go into full screen mode, that is the window you
need to stay in. You cannot toggle back and forth between the small window and the full screen window chat rooms.

To Participate in the Chat: In the main screen you will see all the text of people who “speak”. If you want to say
something, at the bottom of the screen there is a line you can type in. Type your response and hit enter to send it and your
text will appear in the center of the screen.

During the Question and Answer Session: While some of the chat time will be informal with everyone free to
participate, we will set some time aside for a more formal question and answer period. This is your chance to ask
questions to Cindy Sabulis, and the other committee members, or anyone else in the chat room. During the Q&A period
we ask that you type a question mark (?) and wait to be called on. When we call your name, type your question. If
several people type ? at the same time, we’ll take them in order that they appear on the screen.

Chat Room Rules: The rules are simple. Play nice! If anyone becomes obnoxious in any way, verbally attacks another
person, if they become argumentative with others in the room, or if they are asked to give other people a chance to “talk”
and they refuse, that person will be “muted” or bounced out of the room altogether by the administrator. We don’t
anticipate anything like that happening, but we are prepared in case some person wanders in and tries to cause disruption.

Exiting The Chat Room: You can leave the chat room at any time. To do so, if you are in full screen mode, click on
the “X” at the top right hand side. That might bring you back to the small screen chat room again. If it does, click on the
“Session” button on the top left hand side of the chat room. A popup window should come up.  On the bottom right hand
side there is a button that says “Quit”. You can press that and you should be out of the room (or you can press the “X”
and that will take you out as well).

Users in the room will see a message that you have left the room and your name will disappear from the list of people in
the chat room. If you cannot stay for the whole chat session, please remember to log out to give someone else a chance to
come in just in case we reach the maximum number of people the room can hold.

If you can’t get in: Everyone’s computer is different and for one reason or another you might have trouble getting into
the chat room. If this happens, it could because you don’t have the latest version of Java installed on your computer. Also
check and be sure that your settings on your computer aren’t blocking chat rooms. It’s a good idea to test the chat room
prior to Saturday’s chat to be sure you can get in and that you familiarize yourself with the room. You might meet another
Tammy collector in there also early testing the room out, so don’t be shy and say “Hi!”
